Japanese Automaker Toyota Recalls 2.7 Million Cars Worldwide

Japan's biggest car maker Toyota announces to recall about 2.7 million of their cars including the Toyota Corolla and some second-generation hybrid Prius models due to its problems with the steering wheel and water pump system.

Although there were no reported injuries or accidents yet, Toyota spokesperson Joichi Tachikawa had still encouraged their customers to take part of the voluntary recall for their own safety.

He also explained how important the recall it is despite that will put their reputation and sales into jeopardy. It has to do with "insufficient hardness of the steering shaft."

The splines that connect the extension shaft to the gearbox probably will deform if the steering wheel is "frequently and forcefully turned to the full lock position while driving at a very slow speed that could lead to drivers losing control of the vehicle", Tachikawa added.

FYI, this latest recall comes just a month after the Toyota announced its major global recall of an approximately 7.5 million vehicles such as models like Camry and Corolla with fire risk to faulty tied electric windows.

Many still believed that the issue would not really affect Toyota's reputation and trust rating of the people. One of them is Koichi Sugimoto, an auto analyst with BNP Paribas in Tokyo. "The company is taking appropriate measures to fix the problems, so I don't think this will cause significant damage to Toyota's reputation", he said.
